Identification Basics
Correctly identifying a pest is the first step in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Using the wrong treatment (e.g., spraying ants with a repellent) can actually make the infestation worse (budding).
- 8 Legs vs 6 Legs: Count the legs first. 8 legs means it is an Arachnid (Spider, Tick, Mite). 6 legs means it is an Insect.
- Wings: Most adult insects have wings, but some (like Bed Bugs and Ants) may not, or only have them at certain stages (Swarmers).
